As Native American parents, we are obligated to act honorably with the future of our children. Soon they will be the leaders of our nations, states, and country. Our encouragement and support is crucial for the successful education of our children, not just through elementary and high school, but on to colleges and universities. The challenge our children face is to complement the ancient teachings of our people and utilize a wide range of skills in that endeavor. We must take an active role in their lives and learning, so that as tribal people, we may live successfully and excel in this ever-changing world. In this way, children today will take their place among tomorrow’s leaders, as they in turn teach future generations. By following this path, our children will contribute to the success and continuance of our Native Nations.

Larry Myers (Pomo),
Executive Secretary of the California Native American Heritage Commission
